'God's Surprise' - worship Sun 21 Dec: 4 advent

WELCOME to worship. Today, we hear the old, oft-told story of a young couple, making an arduous journey and, upon arriving at their destination, finding the only space to stay is within a stable; it’s the story of a birth, of angels and shepherds, and good news for all. It’s the story of Christmas.

Our WORSHIP LINK IS HERE
and should be available from around 6pm onwards subject to how fast the internet connection is running today!

CHURCH NOTICES:
Sun 28 Dec. 10:30am: Traditional lessons and carols service both onsite and online. So if you don’t get to sing your favourite carol today, there’s still time!

Clydesdale food bank: Thanks to everyone who donated in various ways to the work of the food bank this month; it's hugely appreciated.

Christmas newsletter: hard copy of the newsletter is now available and will be mailed out to those on the member's list. An online version is available here on our blog, which you can access by clicking on the tab marked 'Christmas newsletter' above this page.

A very merry and blessed Christmas to you all!!

'What's in a name?' - worship Sun 14 Dec: Advent 3

WELCOME to this third Sunday in the season of Advent. Last week, we heard Mary's great song of praise, known as the 'Magnificat.' This week, we continue our journey in the Gospel of Luke, hearing another song; this time from Zechariah upon confirming the name of his son: 'John'.
We'll be thinking about names, and, with John, preparing the way for the coming King.

Our WORSHIP LINK IS HERE

CHURCH NOTICES:
'Memory Tree':
Yesterday, we held our annual ‘Tidings of comfort and joy’ service – a service in which we took time to remember loss of various kinds, including remembering those who, for whatever reason, won’t be with us for Christmas this year. As part of that, we put up our wee memory tree, and this will stay in the church now until after the service on the 3rd of January. And thanks to Dee, Rowan, and Ursula, who in their various ways, helped to organise the larger memory tree by the lytch gate – where there are ribbons that can be used to tie to the tree - again, as a way of remembering someone.

Clydesdale Food Bank: a reminder that the food bank box is in the vestibule and available for donations of food and other helpful items for the food bank. Our contact, Ben, noted some of the items they’re low on at the moment are:
sugar, tea bags, tinned veg and fruit, soups.
And if it was possible, it would be lovely if folk could spare some mince pies, or maybe even mini Christmas puddings, if possible, perhaps chocolate for wee ones.
For those of you unable to come to the church, you can donate online via THIS LINK.
Thanks everyone.

Worship Sun 21 Dec.: Given our tradition here in the parish is not to have a service on Christmas Day unless it’s a Sunday, next Sunday will be pretty Christmas oriented, so, If you’re willing, and able to come along, why not take the opportunity to give your favourite Christmas jumper an outing, or wear a little something with a nod to Christmas? There’ll be some carols as well…

Crawford and Wiston 'Christmas elves': on the theme of Christmas, we had a team of wee Christmas elves in the church on Thursday morning, who were delighted to decorate the tree for us, with a little help from Dee. So big thanks to the students of Wiston and Crawford Primary schools for doing that – and we also had some good chat and exploration around the building. Outwith the tree, I think the favourite activity was having a go of ringing our bell – although we did have to hang on to a couple of the wee-er ones to prevent them from taking off!!

Christmas newsletter: our Christmas newsletter is [finally!] at the printers, so hopefully hard copy should be available just before Christmas or around about then. In the meantime, you can access a copy online at the tab above this page... or, simply click on the wee diagonal arrow in the top right hand corner of the picture below and it will pop out for you to view.

As you journey further into this Advent season, may you know God's joy.

God bless,
Nikki

'Mixing it up' - worship for Sun 7 Dec: Advent 2

WELCOME to worship on this 2nd Sunday of Advent.
Last week we were thinking about angelic conversations: the angel, Gabriel visiting Zechariah, and later, Mary, with unexpected news. This week, another conversation, between two soon to be mothers: Elizabeth and Mary. And we hear Mary’s song of praise to God, as she ponders the nature of the child she will bear.
Our WORSHIP LINK IS HERE

Notices follow below...

CHURCH NOTICES:
Sat 13 Dec. 2pm: 'Tidings of Comfort and Joy' - a short, reflective service in which we make space in the busyness of the season to  remember those not with us this Christmas season.

Sat 13 Dec - Sun 4 Jan: 'Memory Tree': in conjunction with the above service, over the following weeks, we’ll have both our wee memory tree in the church, and the larger tree down at the foot of the pathway – and you’re invited to use these as visual prayers and ways of remembering…

Christmas coffee morning - an update: what an excellent wee event. All went well and huge creditand thanks to Sara and Tabitha for their wonderful baking - a real treat! We had a great turnout of folk and I'm delighted to say that we were able to raise a total of £260 to give to Clydesdale Food Bank. Thanks to everyone who spread the word, who came along, who donated so generously.

Food Bank box: just a reminder that over these next Sundays, the food bank box will be in the vestibule for food and other items, if you’re able to drop something in. Ben our food bank contact was in touch yesterday saying that they’re particularly short of:
tea bags, sugar, tinned fruit and veg, tinned soups, and as we’re coming up to Christmas, if it was possible, perhaps some Christmas related items, or wee treats, like: mini xmas puds, mince pies, chocolate. Any items would be hugely appreciated.

'Inconceivable' - worship Sun 30 Nov. - 1 Advent

WELCOME!
We hear from the first chapter of Luke's Gospel - of an angel, one very gobsmacked man, and two women who find themselves expecting the unexpected. We reflect on hope, and ponder the angel, Gabriel's, words: 'nothing is impossible for God.'
Welcome once again to worship online.
The WORSHIP LINK IS HERE

Copied below are the parish notices, for reference, but these can also be found in the online service, as usual - this time, in written, rather than spoken, form to hopefully make it easier to jot down any information as needed.

Today, a time for new beginnings and fresh starts as we enter into the season of Advent.

CHURCH NOTICES:
Thanks -
just to say thanks, as ever, to those of you for keeping things going while I was away…again! And particular thanks to Dee and Heather, for being our contact people.

Sat. 6 Dec., 10.30am - 12pm - Christmas coffee morning:
This coming Saturday, we have our Christmas coffee morning from 10.30-12pm – please come along, bring friends, spread the word. Along with refreshments, there’ll be prize draws to add to the atmosphere. Entry free, but it’d be great if a wee donation could be made in aid of Clydesdale Food Bank.

Sun. 7 Dec., 10.30am - Communion:
Next Sunday morning, we’ll be holding our quarterly communion – as ever, please do let folk know – all are welcome to the table!

Sat. 13 Dec., 2pm - 'Tidings of Comfort and Joy'
Our annual service ‘Tidings of comfort and joy’ will be held in the church. A shorter, more reflective space particularly for those who find this time of year difficult, as well as an opportunity to remember those who won't be with us over Christmas.  up to and including Sun. 4 Jan.

from Sat 13 Dec - Sun 4 Jan - Christmas 'memory' trees:
There will be a small 'memory' tree inside the church on which to place a wee blue bauble as a way of remembering loved ones at this time of year - especially those who, for whatever reason, may not be with us over the Christmas period. And, as we did last year, we’ll be putting up a Christmas ‘memory' tree by the lytch gate at the pathway to the church, along with a box of ribbons – with an invite for people to tie a ribbon to it - again, as a way of remembering.

Update on 'cluster' conversations and presbytery plan:
please click HERE for the latest update as at Monday 17 November.

Just a note that we're hoping to recommence online worship at the beginning of Advent, Sun 30th Nov., all things being well.

Leadhills Memorial, 2025
Remembrance Sunday services:
Our three services this year went well. A slight change of 'routine' with two, however, with a swapping of times for Crawford at 12.30 and Leadhills at 1.30. This was to allow time for the Depute Lord Lieutenant, Bill Tennant, to come to the service at Leadhills - his third of the day, at that point. Mr Tennant read 'In Flander's Fields' and led off the laying of wreaths. There is another tucked around the corner of the memorial from the Council, with Councillor Ralph Barker representing. The third wreath was placed by Mr Steve Johnson, representing the Village Council. The other items that were placed at the Memorial were from the pupils of Leadhills Primary School, and these were placed at a separate service on Friday, at 11am.

A date for your diary:
Sat 6 Dec., 10.30-12pm:

'The imitation game' - worship 1 June, 2025

WELCOME to worship, where we find ourselves in the third and last week reflecting on the words of the prophet Micah, on what the Lord requires of us: to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.

Just a quick recap – in week one, we examined the Micah passage through the lens of 1st Corinthians, which reminded us that we do what the Lord requires as a community – each bringing our different skills and talents to the mix.
Last week, we thought about the appropriate industrial work kit for the task, as we looked at Micah through the lens of Colossians where we were encouraged – to ‘clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,’ and a little further on: ‘above all, clothe yourselves with love – which binds everything together in perfect harmony.’

This week, the lens we’ll explore Micah’s words with come from Ephesians which urges us to ‘be imitators of God’…

So, if you like, in a nutshell -
Week 1 – community
Week 2 – clothes
Week 3 – copying

Our WORSHIP LINK IS HERE and the service will be available sometime after 8pm Sunday evening.

CHURCH NOTICES:
Only the one, which is that as this is a month in which communion falls, we're once again flagging up the work of Clydesdale Food Bank. Palm Sunday - worship link for Sun 13 April

WELCOME to worship...
We have moved from the wilderness and journeyed to Jerusalem and today, as we ourselves don’t have other services through Holy Week, we’ll journey from the cheers and excitement of Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem, through to the jeers and arrest, crucifixion and death on the cross on Good Friday. To do so, we’ll let the story tell itself through scripture and short reflections.
You can find the WORSHIP LINK HERE.

Church notices follow below...

CHURCH NOTICES:
Kirk Session meeting after worship today: Session will meet for one-item of business - to approve our annual accounts. Our Annual Stated Meeting will be held on the 25th of May after worship for the congregation to receive the accounts.

Holy Week services: although we aren't having any services in our building during Holy Week, there are services being held within our cluster group, details of which are as follows:

Maundy Thursday Communion, 7pm Cairngryffe Church - We'll be remembering the story of that first communion, held in an upper room in Jerusalem... Worship will be conducted by the Rev. Louise Mackay and Rev. Dr Nikki Macdonald. All are welcome to come, for it is the table of the Lord, and he bids us welcome.
Also:
Maundy Thurs reflections, 7pm at Rigside Community Hall
 - this service of quiet reflection and prayer will be led by Mr Bill Love.
Good Friday, 7pm at both Douglas Church and Cairngryffe - services of reflection remembering the events of Good Friday.

Just a wee encouragement to attend: given we’re now in daylight saving time, all services should be well and truly finished before it gets dark – I say this as I know some of you find it hard to drive at night-time. If you’d like to attend, perhaps it might be good to have a chat with others and maybe do some car sharing?

Clydesdale Food Bank - I’ll be uplifting food bank items after worship this morning to drop off to my food bank contact for distribution. Thanks so much for the donations.

Blessings to you all as you enter into Holy Week.

Welcome to worship on this first Sunday of Lent, where once again, we begin the

'Of crumbs and Canaanites' - worship for Sun 7 July

Welcome to our time of worship today.
Last week we spent time reflecting on a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman as they talked of ‘living water’. This week, in worship, we’ll be picking up on another conversation Jesus has – this time, with a Canaanite woman, who asks for his help. In the course of the meeting, an insight from the woman just possibly expands Jesus’ own thinking on a particular matter.

The WORSHIP LINK IS HERE and the service will hopefully be available from 7pm onwards.

Church notices/
Just the one, which is to note that the food bank box has now been uplifted. Thanks for all the kind donations. We'll be collecting once again over the month of September and first Sunday of October (which will be the Harvest service).

Have a good week and God bless,

Nikki

'The woman' - worship for Sun 30 June

Welcome to this week's time of worship. Today we spend time drinking from Jacob's Well, and listening in to a conversation between Jesus and an unnamed woman: they end up having quite the theological conversation!

The WORSHIP LINK IS HERE and the service should be ready from 7pm and hopefully, earlier depending on the tech!

Church notices/

Sun 30 June, 5pm - evening worship: As it’s the last Sunday of the month, we have evening worship up in Leadhills Village Hall at 5pm. Afterwards, there’ll be the opportunity for a catch up over a cuppa. So if you’re able to come along, it would be great to see you.

Clydesdale Foodbank: This is the last Sunday of our foodbank month, but I’m wondering, as I was late putting the box out, if I might just leave it for another week, and collect it after worship next week – just in case you’ve not yet had the opportunity to drop in something. And for those of you online, you’ll see the website address of the foodbank to your right in the links.

Stewarding / reading rota: The new stewarding and readers rota is out and covers July to the year’s end – a copy will go up in the church vestibule as well as online… and if you want a printed copy, let me know and I’ll get that sorted for you.

That's all of our notices for this week, may you find this time of worship refreshing!

God bless,

Nikki

'Old, old stories' - worship for Sun 23 June

WELCOME to our time of worship. Last week, we were thinking about sons and leaving home. This week, along with marking International Refugee Day, we step back in time to Egypt and revisit one of the sons from last week, Moses. When God had called him at Mount Horeb, Moses was tasked with the liberation of God’s people… but why were they needing to be freed? And, what might that story have to do with us here and now in Scotland, in the 21st century?

The WORSHIP LINK IS HERE and should be active from about 7pm Sunday.
(I'm currently trialling putting worship up after Sunday mornings rather than filming and uploading on Sat evening - so I can film parts of the service in-situ and hopefully it will help give you a sense of being in worship with those in the building. It does also help cut back on time for me... but, please do send my your feedback, and I'll try to accommodate re. timing)

CHURCH NOTICES/
Sun 23 June, 11.30am: Stated annual meeting. Just to flag up that after worship today, we’ll have our Stated Annual Meeting – through in the hall, over a cuppa. It’s a quick review of last year – looking at what we did, where we’re going, and also receiving the accounts from last year.

Sun 30 June, 5pm: Evening worship. We meet in Leadhills Village Hall for worship in the style of the Taizé Community. Refreshments and a blether after the service. All welcome

Food Bank month: this month we’re collecting donations of goods for Clydesdale food bank. The box is in the vestibule at church, or you can pop goods in at the manse if you're passing. After worship next week, I’ll be gathering up donations and dropping them off. For those of you online, if you’re able and willing to donate, you can do so by visiting the food bank website and donating online. The FOODBANK LINK IS HERE
Thanks in advance, everyone.

Sat 10 Aug. - 7 for 7.30pm: Village Cinema - a Southern Villages cluster announcement: here’s a date for your diaries. Our friends in Cairngryffe Church will be hosting the Carmichael Community Cinema again – doors will open from 7pm for a 7.30 start on Saturday the 10th of August. And the film showing will be the classic ‘Whisky Galore’ – it’s a free event, and there’ll be a refreshment stand available. Please do spread the word and come along!

Have a good week, and until next time, God bless!

Nikki
