Harvest Festival Week at Upper Clyde

A sample of some of the delicious baking on offer
It's Harvest Festival time!
And to begin our Harvest week in style, we held a coffee morning....
A good time was had by all and we raised £220 - a fun raiser and a fund-raiser. Proceeds will be split between the Clydesdale Food Bank and ourselves [helps pay for the heating oil!].
Thanks to everyone who came along and supported our event, and special thanks to Sara and Tabitha for their fabulous baking. We're all looking forward to the opening of their cake shop in Biggar 'A Piece of Cake' and wish them well in their new adventure.

Meanwhile, around the five schools within the parish, decorations are being made to display in the church for this coming Sunday's Harvest Festival Service ... please do join us if you can at 10.30.
[And just a reminder to members of the Kirk Session - our rescheduled meeting is this week, on Wed 30th, at 7pm]

Worship Sun 16 Oct - 'Matters of the heart'

WELCOME/ today in our time of worship, we’ll be meeting two different people from vastly different walks of life, and listening it to their conversations with God...

To go straight across to the service, please click on the LINK HERE.

Notices follow below.

CHURCH NOTICES/ A huge thank you to everyone for making our harvest service last Sunday so successful:
it was lovely to welcome the Moderator, Iain Greenshields and his wife, Linda;
it was great to see so many people gathered together in the building, and good to watch the viewing figures online ticking over;
and it was fab to see all the brilliant decorations - flocks of sheep created by our primary schools (they were awesome), and all the beautiful floral arrangements in the windows and vestibule (stunning, thanks flower folk).
Thanks as well, to the lunch team, the makers, and bakers, and those who set up, served, and cleared away.
Two more things - thanks to all for your donations of food for the food bank - there was so much, that I couldn't fit it into my car... so thanks to Ben, our local food bank rep. for kindly transporting it up the road!
Our leave-offering for the work of 'The Ripple Effect' (aka Send a Cow) raised £86.
Overall, it was a fantastic team effort... and a lovely Harvest Festival.

Evening worship: is on tonight at 5pm, at Leadhills Village Hall – it’s our delayed Songs of Praise from the hills service. So, if you fancy a good sing and can make it, it would be lovely to see you.

Parish magazine: it's that time of year again, as we begin to prepare for our Advent and Christmas edition of the magazine. If you've any favourite seasonally appropriate poems, jokes, perhaps a recipe, or other items that you'd like to share, please get in touch with our editor, Dee. If you're not sure how, just leave a message in the 'contact' us link to the right hand side of this page, and I can pass it along. The deadline for all items to be in is by 1pm Sun 14 Nov. Thanks in advance!

I hope that you enjoy this time of worship and that it helps encourage you in your walk with God.
Have a good week, and God bless,
Nikki

Worship Sun 16 Oct - Give thanks for the Harvest

WELCOME/
Hello, and welcome to our Harvest Service -
which was filmed 'in house' Sunday morning. It took a wee while to format for uploading on to our Youtube channel, but is now available.
If you'd like to go straight across our WORSHIP LINK IS HERE

Otherwise, just a couple of notices...
NOTICES/
First of all, huge thanks:
to the children and staff at our primary schools, whose talent, imagination, and creativity
are in evidence throughout the church building - with their totally sheep-tastic decorations.
What a superb effort.
Thanks, as well, to everyone who helped in some way with organising our Harvest service
and making it a very special event on the church calendar -
from flower and window decorators, to harvest lunch makers and bakers,
to all who donated items for the food bank... and all the clearer-upper-ers.
Great team work, everyone.

Special thanks to the Moderator, the Rt. Rev. Dr Iain Greenshields, for coming to visit with us,
and to preach - and welcome also, to Linda Greenshields.

Two non-harvest items:
evening worship - a reminder that this coming Sunday, we have evening worship across at Leadhills Village Hall, at 5pm – everyone’s welcome to come along for what is a delayed Songs of Praise service from the hills. And after the service, there’ll be an opportunity to catch up with one another over a cuppa. So if you can make it, do come along!
parish newsletter - it's that time of year again. We're seeking items for our upcoming Christmas newsletter. If you have any favourite Christmas memories, or a favourite carol or poem, or even a wee joke, please pass these along to Dee, our editor. If you've not got her details, just get in touch via the 'contact us' link on the right hand side of this page.

As you head into a new week, may you know God's blessing.

the Rt. Rev. Dr Iain Greenshields, to our service as our special guest preacher.
And a special welcome to Linda, Siona, and Susi Greenshields,
who will also be joining us.
Thank you to our schools, who have been using lots of imagination and creativity in the making of special decorations for the service. I can truly say that it will be... sheep-tastic! 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑
And, of course, many thanks to everyone who has also offered to help with decorations, donations, and providing catering - it is truly appreciated.
n.b. for those who follow our worship online, we are hoping to film the service

WELCOME/ Hello! Welcome to worship on this Pentecost Sunday – where we remember and celebrate the birthday of the church: the day of the coming of the Holy Spirit to those who followed, and still follow, Jesus.

NOTICES/
Caring hearts project -
A wee update on our ‘caring hearts’ project – where we’re knitting or crocheting hearts for our 5 schools within the parish. The total number of hearts I’ve received so far is 125. Let’s see if we can push this to 200, and when we’ve got that target, I’ll be parcelling them up in readiness to distribute to our schools at the beginning of the new school year in August. A great effort so far everyone, so thank you so very much!

Pulpit swap - Next week I’ll be across at Douglas and Rigside churches, where I’ll be conducting services of holy communion for both congregations. Onsite at Upper Clyde, we welcome Denham Macdougall – the interim moderator for Douglas Valley Parish, and also an elder at Cairngryffe church.
Online, I’ll be providing links to other online services to go and visit.

Jubilee Community events - Both Crawford and Roberton will be holding community gatherings today as part of the Jubilee weekend. If you're able, why not head along to support these events, and have the opportunity to catch up with folk for a blether and a cuppa.

These are all the notices. As we go into this coming week, may you know the comfort, the encouragement, and the strength of God's Spirit with you, in all you think, and say, and do.

God bless,
Nikki

Worship Sun 13 Feb 'Levelling up'

WELCOME/
Hello. Welcome to worship!
Today we consider not so much the sermon on the mount but the sermon on the plain – Luke’s version of the more well-known sermon found in the gospel of Matthew.
There's just the one notice – and it concerns a wee project that we’re wanting to get up and running within the church and the wider parish community. It’s called the ‘Caring hearts’ project.
This focuses on the younger members living in our wider parish community, who go to our five primary schools – and I’m asking those of you who knit or crochet for some help to enable us to do this.
You can find out more about it on our dedicated blog page -
here's the link CARING HEARTS PROJECT

Our WORSHIP LINK IS HERE.

As ever, I hope you find this time of worship an encouragement,
and also spiritual nourishment.
God bless and may you know God walking with you through the week.

'Caring Hearts' community project

Hi everyone!
I just want to flag up our latest community project - 'Caring Hearts'.
It's aimed to help some of the younger people in our community by way of asking the crafters in the community to take up their knitting needles and crochet hooks.
To find out more about the project, along with patterns, check out the new, dedicated page above on the tabs or just click HERE and the link will take you there directly.
And thanks in advance for getting on board, folks - very much appreciated.

Worship, Sun 8 Nov: Remembrance Service

WELCOME/
Hello and welcome to this online service of Remembrance.
Due to the current restrictions in place that stop us from gathering at our various memorials within the parish, and also due to some ongoing electrical work in the parish church that prevents us holding a service there, I hope that this online version of our service of Remembrance will be helpful.

Just a couple of notes:
Since the lockdown earlier in the year, Upper Clyde has been posting worship online -
so, if this is the first time you've visited with us in this way, a special welcome to you.
The service is put together and played as a playlist across on our YouTube channel, and I'll provide the link a little further below.
When we do manage to open the church doors once again for worship, with all due precautions taken, our online worship will be continuing for those who need to shield, or who feel just a little too anxious to attend in person on the day - so, should you wish to continue to join us for worship, why not bookmark or subscribe to our YouTube channel?

A wee word of thanks to all those who helped in some way with this service - particularly around the Act of Remembrance itself: truly, it's been a community effort and is very much appreciated by me!

For those of you with younger ones, if it's helpful before you move on to the worship service, THIS LINK will take you across to a web page where you can download some poppy craft activities related to our theme for today.

In the meantime, you can access our service of worship via this link:

From wherever you're watching, and whenever, let's worship God, and let's remember...

Worship, Sun 18 Oct: 'Joy' - pt 4 of our series on Philippians

WELCOME -
Hello and welcome to worship with Upper Clyde Parish.
It is always good to remember that, no matter how we gather, it is always good to offer God our worship, for God is truly worthy of our praise.

Over these last few weeks, we’ve been delving into Paul’s letter to the Philippians, and we have arrived at our final chapter – chapter 4. If you wanted a brief summary of this chapter, you could probably do it in two words:
‘Joy’ and ‘Peace’ - and I can almost hear the very long sigh of a certain Rev. I. M. Jolly at the thought of joy...!!

CHURCH NOTICES:
Guild Quiz -
Our friends in the Guild have set a quiz for us all. The quiz sheets are £1, and available at the Abington Store, or get in touch with Heather Watt or Mary Hamilton.
All proceeds go to the ongoing projects that the Church of Scotland Guild supports.
Many thanks to our Guild for organising this and for giving us a little light relief in what for some us are difficult times.
And a little advance notice: there’ll also be a quiz out in December...

Church building -
It's a long, slow process, I'm afraid, however, I’m hoping to have a little bit more information next week on what’s happening. We have received a quote for all the electrical work, so a meeting of the Session needs to happen, along with a wee discussion on finances for the work.
That said, given the current stricter lockdown regulations in force in South Lanarkshire, the Session is not really minded to push opening the doors just yet – even if we could...
We want you to feel safe and not take unnecessary risks.
Thanks, as ever, for your patience.

WORSHIP AND RESOURCE LINKS -
In the meantime, turning to worship, here are the links -

WELCOME and CHURCH NOTICES/
Hello and welcome!
Our worship is online once again over on our YouTube channel.

CHURCH NOTICES/
'Heart and Soul'/ General Assembly:
This time of year is normally when the Church of Scotland holds its General Assembly.
As we know, ‘normally’ is not quite where we’re at right now, with lockdown, so the Assembly has been cancelled, however, one event that happens on the Sunday of Assembly is a big gathering in Princes St called ‘Heart and Soul’ – and it’s a great event. Now, while that won’t be happening in Princes St, technology has stepped in and this afternoon, there’ll be an online version of it - on livestream. Just click this LINK FOR THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND website and you'll find yourself at the right web page... all you have to do then is click on the live link to join in.
It begins at 2pm, and there'll be music, some good conversation and the chance to have a look around at what the Church of Scotland is doing in the many presbyteries and parishes around Scotland.

Worship - music:
A wee note about worship: I’d planned this year on having two Songs of Praise services – one for spring and one for autumn. So, those plans have come a little unstuck, but I was wondering... it doesn’t have to stop you nominating some of your favourite hymns – we could have a go of it online, I think – or, at the very least, I could include them in our online services over the next wee while. So, do get in touch with me by phone or email, and let me know what hymns or other praise songs you’d like. Also, for those of you who do readings, and, who have a mobile phone, I’m wondering if we could do some recording of readings by you, so that it’s not just my voice throughout worship. You’ll hear a little later that we have managed to have a go at that this week. So do let me know if you’d be willing to record a reading. Thanks in advance.

Pastoral matters:
From the pastoral side of things, again, just the usual thank you for all you’re doing while we’re in lockdown: I know that some of you have been supporting community groups like the foodbank, some donated to Christian Aid last week during Christian Aid week, some of you are saving your stamps for Crossreach...
There are those of you doing the work of prayer, others who are ringing around and checking in on folk. In the many ways you’re doing it, thank you for showing your love and your compassion for friends and neighbours both near and far – practising love in action.
The usual request from me: if you know of anyone who might need a referral for the foodbank, or who might just like a listening ear, do let me know.

All-age, family-friendly worship resources:

What Is Love?  all age
You will need: highlighter pens, copies of 1 Corinthians 13
(you can readily copy the text from https://www.biblegateway.com/ ... print off)

Two different ways of doing this:
as a family, or each child individually...
make sure everyone has a copy of 1 Corinthians 13 and a highlighter pen.
Look through the passage and find all the things that love is or does (all the attributes of love)
and when you find something about love highlight it with the highlighter pen.
Compare your findings as a way into the story today.

Crafts
Heart Badges  age 3-5
You will need: red card cut into heart shapes, coloured pens, coloured pencils,
self-stick stickers, sticky tape, safety pins, clear self-adhesive plastic.
Give each child a heart shape and ask them to decorate it using the materials provided.
Make the heart shape into a badge with the children by helping them to cover their heart
with self-stick clear plastic, which also helps to keep their design in place, and by attaching
a safety pin to the back of the badge with sticky tape.
The children can then wear their heart badges.

Talk with the children about love and how a heart is often used as a symbol for love.
Talk about the people who love them and how they know that they are loved.
How do people show they love them?
Talk about God’s love and how they might show God’s love to others.

Love Biscuits  age 6-8
You will need: a supply of small heart-shaped biscuits, tubes of coloured icing, paper plates,
doilies, felt pens, cling-film, stick on parcel bows.
Give each child four heart-shaped biscuits and ask them to pipe with the icing the letter ‘L’ on one,
‘O’ on another, ‘V’ on another and ‘E’ on the last one. While the icing on their biscuits is setting
ask them to decorate the border of their paper plate.
Give each child a doily and ask them to place it on their plate.
Now they can arrange their biscuits on the plate to spell out ‘LOVE’ and then wrap the whole
plate in cling film. A decorative bow can then be added to the top of their cling-film.

Talk with the children about love and the people they love.
Discuss the different ways we can show someone we love them.
Talk with the children about who they might like to give their ‘Love’ biscuits and why they
chose that person or those people.

A Gift Of Love  age 9-12
You will need: red card, a box, pencils, scissors, coloured felt-tip pens, PVA glue,
glue spreaders, heart shaped stickers, tissue paper, either small red scented tea-lights
or small packs of love hearts.
Give each child a box and ask them to decorate it.
On the lid use decorative writing using 'Love is...'
(e.g. you could use bubble writing which is then coloured in using the words ‘Love is...’)

Now explain that they are going to complete that phrase by using words from the passage
(for example: patient, kind, not jealous, not boastful, bears all things, never ends and so on)
and write one of their different endings to the phrase on each face of the box again in decorative
writing. They can then decorate the other spaces on the box using patterns or stickers.
The box can then be filled with a little tissue paper and either a scented tea-light or some
‘Love Heart’ sweets and be given to someone they love.

Talk with the children about love and how we can show love to others.
With this age-group it would be interesting to ask them to read some of the verses aloud but
replace the word love with their name and then discuss with them what that should mean for
them and how they should behave and show God’s love to others.

Growing Love all age
You will need: white paper towel, plastic disposable plates, pens (not felt tips, they will run!),
cress seeds, water.
Give each child a sheet of paper towel and ask them to draw a heart shape in the centre of the sheet.
Ask the children to place the sheet on the plastic plate and then using some of the water dampen
the paper. Giving the children cress seeds ask them to sprinkle them carefully within the heart
shape only. Explain that if the paper is kept damp the cress seeds will grow in a heart shape and
when grown the cress can then be cut and shared with others in the family.
Talk with the children about love and how a heart is often used as a symbol for love.
Discuss different ways we can show God’s love and ask them to think about how God’s love can
be grown. Talk about how the seeds they have sown could be seen as seeds of love and how
these seeds of love will grow and how that love can then be shared with others allowing
God’s love to grow even more.

Remembrance Centenary project update

Like many groups around Scotland, Upper Clyde organised a project
to mark the Centenary of war's end, 1918-2018.
A request to knit or crochet poppies has been met with a brilliant response from
all around the parish. Sunday 28th was the final Sunday to get the poppies in,
so that we could begin to make our wee banner for the church.
Given the response, some window decorating will also be done making use of the
remaining poppies, including a window representing others caught up in the conflict,
such as children - who may have lost a father, or both parents, family members,
or even their own lives.

Huge thanks to all who helped in some way, the response has been humbling.
On Wednesday a small team gathered in the hall, and began the task of assembling
the banner. In the pic. below you'll see them mid-banner.
The banner itself is now hanging in the church in the days now leading up to
Remembrance Sunday itself.

Shortly after the service on the 11th, all poppies will be available for a minimum donation of £1, and monies raised will be divided between Poppy Scotland and Help for Heroes. Let us know if you'd like
any via the 'Contact us' form on the side bar of the page.

Sunday worship 18 Dec: 'bingo', shepherds, baptism, and carols

A busy and fun Sunday! Here's a wee round-up:

Morning worship:
At our rather packed all-age, informal morning service we told the Christmas story
by playing a game of 'Christmas Bingo'.  We heard a reading from Matthew's Gospel that was
not unlike an episode of 'Who do you think you are', and discovered some surprising people
in the midst of the long list of names in Jesus' family tree.  In our other reading we
heard of angels visiting shepherds in Luke 2:8-20, and later, had an imagined reflection
from one of the shepherds about that night. He was rather surprised that angels would
trouble to visit folk such as him, given his own people looked down on the likes of shepherds;
maybe God's love was for everyone, not just those who thought they were 'respectable.'
We also had great fun welcoming young Innes into God's family through the sacrament of
baptism. And, we unfurled the last of our lovely Advent/Christmas banners, so beautifully made
by our craft group.

Community Carol singing, with Junction 13
From 1.30 - 5.15, folk from our community choir, 'Junction 13', managed to carol their way
around 5 of our 9 villages in the parish:
Abington, Crawfordjohn, Crawford, Leadhills, and Wanlockhead.
Huge thanks to our singers, for their tireless efforts - and particular thanks to the Foleys for organising us re. music and a spot of supper before evening worship.
Thanks, too, for the hospitality provided by Abington Store, Colebrooke Arms, and Hopetoun Arms and their much-welcome mince pies, choc. Yule log, lots of tea/coffee - which kept us all keeping on.
We managed to raise c.£160 for Cancer Research. Thanks for the kind donations! :)

and... evening worship: our Carol Service in Scotland's highest village
We finished the day with our annual Carol Service, in Scotland's highest village, Wanlockhead,
followed by some fab home baking. Thanks, as ever, to our friends from Leadhills Silver Band
[from Scotland's second highest village!] and to the fabulous Mary Hamilton, for providing the
music. And thanks too, to: Teresa Brasier, who put the service together, and to all the readers.
Below is a snippet of our final carol for the evening - apol's for the wobbly camera work on the
small Android phone!

New group - 'Creative Crafters'

Enjoy doing various handcrafts?
Like a creative challenge, a blether, and a cuppa?
Come and join our 'Creative Crafters' group, which will meet in the church hall. Dates and times to be confirmed.

The initial challenge is to gather together, and explore creating some seasonal banners to be hung in the church.
To start us off, the minister is particularly keen to see what ideas the
group might come up with and create for Advent and Christmas 2016.
If you’re interested, and know folk outwith the congregation who’d also be interested, please contact Nikki via the contact link on the right-hand column.
Having announced this on Sunday during worship, we've already got three keen folk, who are raring to go. Come and join us!
