Update 6 August

NEWS, INFORMATION, UPDATES 6th AUGUST

Annual leave:
The minister has now returned from annual leave.
Many thanks to the Rev. Morag Garrett, minister of Coalburn and Lesmahagow Old Parish for providing funeral cover over the holiday, to Mr Roy Garrett for conducting worship on Sun 26 July, and to Ralph Barker and Ursula Baillie for leading our Songs of Praise service on Sun 2 August.
Thanks, also to Dr Dee Yates and Ms Heather Watt for acting as parish contacts during this time.

Annual Stated Meeting: our ASM will be held on Sunday 9th August on the return of the minister. During the meeting, we will receive the accounts and hear an overview of 2025. This is much later than usual this year, but huge thanks to Ralph, and to the presbytery finance team for helping untangle some 'heritage' accounts that had held up the accounts being approved.

Parish magazine - summer edition: we are hoping that this will be ready around mid-August and available for distribution.

Martin Raine: we were very sad to hear of Martin's death. Please remember Janet and the family at this time. The funeral will be held at the parish church on Thurs 13th August at 2pm. Thereafter, refreshments at the family home in Crawford.

'With what?' Worship for Sunday 18 May

WELCOME to worship this week where, over these next three weeks, we’re going to be hearing a particular passage from Micah each week, along with an accompanying scriptural text.

So, spanning these three weeks, we’ll be hearing from Micah 6, verses 6-8 – reminding us just what the Lord requires of us… and these three actions:
to do justice
to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with our God…
Our question for the day: ‘With what shall I come before the Lord?’

Our WORSHIP LINK IS HERE (and finally available - apologies for the delay due to tech issues!)

CHURCH NOTICES -
Apology:
my  apologies for being away slightly longer than anticipated, and not delivering worship online. Just prior to returning from annual leave I received news of the deaths of my mother and stepfather, so took an extra week off. Huge thanks for folks filling in while I’ve been away. Also, thanks for the kind words during this unexpected double bereavement; I’ve felt very much supported, and it’s much appreciated.

Parish newsletter: due to the above, our newsletter is now a wee bit behind schedule, as I'd hoped to get the last of it done and dusted before I came back from leave... There's just a couple of items that I'll need to rejig, but soon, friends, soon.

General Assembly of the Church of Scotland: it's that time of year again, and this year, I'm a commissioner. This means that, even though I'm back from both holiday and compassionate leave, my time this week will be fully given over to Assembly matters.
I'll be more fully present in the parish from Friday!
If you do need to get in contact with me, either email, or use my mobile number - I might not be able to answer immediately, but do leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can: 07985919509

Sun 25 May - Stated Annual Meeting: it's also this time of year... according to my diary, our SAM is this coming Sunday and will be held on site immediately after worship. All are welcome to attend and share a cuppa as we look back over the last year.

Evening worship: a reminder that our evening services are on hold for the moment, so there'll be no worship this evening in Leadhills.

Sun 1 June - quarterly Communion: looking further ahead, don’t forget that our quarterly service of communion is on the horizon, and will be held on Sunday the first of June…

God bless as enter into a new week,
Nikki

'The invisible man' - worship Sun 1 Dec: Advent 1

Welcome: Voices of prophets from long ago, a story of One foretold, and of the invisible made visible... A message of hope is in the air. Join us for worship on this first Sunday of Advent...
The worship link is HERE.

Church notices:
Christmas newsletter update - our Christmas newsletter is done – and here on our website in digital form. Click on the tab above marked 'Christmas newsletter'. Meanwhile, hard copies are with the printer and should hopefully be collected early in the week and then, posted out.

Farewell: After our service this morning we’ll be saying a wee farewell to Angela, who’s with us for the last time, today, before she steps down as our Community Outreach Worker, and works a little more close to home. Over her four years with us, we've appreciated her presence with us in worship, and in the wider community; her work in helping us realise some of the projects we dreamed up several years back in our Local Church Review - such as 'Let's get growing', the farming and Anna chaplaincies; her willingness to pitch in where needed, her diligence, and sense of humour. We will miss her but she goes with our prayers, our love, and our blessing at this time of endings and new beginnings.

Sun. 8 Dec. 10.30am: Worship cover: this coming Sunday, the Rev. George Shand will be making a return visit, while I'm is recovering from my wee operation on Friday. George will also be providing urgent pastoral cover over the short time that I'll be away. Online worship: I’m hoping to put up some links to other services, for you to join.

Sat. 14 Dec., 2pm: 'Tidings of comfort and joy' a service of remembering in the parish church. A quiet space to remember those no longer with us... during this service, and throughout the rest of the season to Epiphany [Sun 5th Jan], our memory tree will be available in the church - should you wish to add a bauble as a visual prayer, or reminder, of someone on your mind and in your heart who may not be with you over Christmas, for whatever reason....

Memory tree: this year, we'll also be putting up a tree outside by the lytch gate at the foot of the path leading up to the church. At the base of the tree will be a box containing assorted ribbons. In the midst of all the Christmas songs and activities, the loss of a loved one can be just that bit sharper. If you would find it helpful, please feel free to come along, and take a moment to tie a ribbon on the tree as a way of remembering a loved one. The tree will remain until just after Hogmanay.

Sun. 15 Dec. 10.30am: Worship. Our theme will be 'joy'.
and then, at 5pm: worship at Leadhills Village Hall: join us in the hall to sing some Christmas favourites, and celebrate the coming King. Refreshments thereafter, followed by the annual village carols with the Leadhills Silver Band.

'For all the saints' - worship for Sun 3 Nov

WELCOME to worship.

We continue to lean into the seasonal time of year, Halloween, aka 'All Saints' and 'All Souls'. Last week, we focused in on one specific 'hero' of the faith. This week, we've a whole list, in among the crowd of great witnesses. Where might we fit, in amongst this particular group? Today is an opportunity to further explore what it is to live in faith as we think of them, and maybe even folk we may know or have known, who’ve helped inspire and encourage us in our own life of faith.
Our WORSHIP LINK HERE

CHURCH NOTICES/
Sun 3 Nov - after worship: a reminder that there'll be a short Session meeting after the service.

Sun 10 Nov - REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY - services will be held around the parish to mark the day.
10.30 in the parish church at Abington, as part of morning worship
11am at the Wanlockhead Memorial
12pm at the Leadhills Memorial
1pm at the Crawford Memorial

Church newsletter: Christmas edition - a mission for you, should you choose to accept it: Dee and Nikki would love for you to get in touch by the end of worship next week to tell us what your favourite Christmas carol is - and why [in just a sentence or three]. We'd like to do a wee feature on this in the newsletter. The newsletter will be both mailed out and uploaded here on the blog site.

In the meantime, have a good week, and blessings as you go about it,
Nikki

'An ever-fixed mark' - worship for Sun 28 April

Welcome to our service of worship for this week - again, sorry for the delay and thanks so much for your patience.

To go straight to the service, please click on the WORSHIP LINK HERE...
Just to note that I'm posting this at just after 10pm Monday evening - the service is currently uploading and might take an hour and a half to complete. So, it should hopefully be available around or just after midnight!!

CHURCH NOTICES/
Parish deaths: it's with sadness that I pass on the news of the deaths of John Wight and Mary Craig over the weekend. Once I have details for the time of both funeral services, I'll let you know. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers are with both families at this time.

Presbytery plan: at an all day meeting of presbytery on Saturday, the presbytery plan was finally approved after a number of amendments, motions, and counter-motions from parishes across the presbytery. Our cluster of Upper Clyde, Douglas Valley, and Cairngryffe parishes were successful in our bid to keep all 3 places of worship open, in order to cover this large, rural area. There will be a review at some point in 2027. What next? The plan will go to the national planning team for approval, and if passed, the presbytery will begin the process of implementing the plan. This will take time. For us, it means we begin the preparations necessary to begin the process of uniting our cluster into one parish, subject to all three congregations voting to agree. More details to follow in due course and these will be placed on the page 'presbytery plan' which you can find above along the tabs. The outcome for our area was much better than I'd dare hope for. So, potentially, a new chapter will begin for our parish.

Evening worship: I know this is after the fact, but just to say we had a really lovely time of worship in the Leadhills Village Hall last night. Thanks to Andy Foley for leading us in a reflection on joy via William Blake's painting 'Oberon, Titania and Puck with Fairies Dancing'. We were delighted to be joined by an old friend, Ann Lyall, who had worked with the parish during the previous vacancy and through the union of Lowther and Glencaple into Upper Clyde Parish. She is now retired and doing a 'farewell' tour of the different parishes in which she'd served.

Parish magazine: preparations for the latest edition of the parish magazine are underway now that we have news of the presbytery plan. It will hopefully be ready within the next few weeks.

God bless
Nikki

'We think it 'mazing' - worship for Sun 3 March, Lent 3

Welcome to our service of worship on this third Sunday in the season of Lent.

Today, we hear two stories from Luke’s gospel, in which we encounter two people in particular need of help – two people, whose circumstances couldn’t be more different and  yet, in both situations, we find the same love and compassion extended by Jesus…
You'll find the LINK FOR WORSHIP HERE

As is usual, church notices are copied below for reference.

Church notices/
Parish newsletter - an update:
instead of an Easter newsletter, we're having a slight change of plan. As there will be a meeting of presbytery on the 27th of April to discuss the amended 2nd draft plan, Dee and I thought we would hold off on publishing the newsletter until after the meeting has taken place. This way, I can put include an up to date report on where we are - or aren't - at, with regard to the plan. So, for a change, we'll be having a Pentecost newsletter instead (Pentecost falls on 19th of May this year).

In the meantime, I’ll get information out about services around Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter – by way of poster, and on our blog.

Lent appeal - '40 for 40': Don’t forget our ’40 for 40’ Lent appeal on behalf of Clydesdale food bank – on site, we’re hoping to achieve a target of at least 40 donated items for the food bank by the end of Lent – to be taken to the food bank after Palm Sunday. If you have any items that you’d like to donate to the food bank, either drop them into the box in the vestibule at church, or, just let me know and I can arrange to have them collected. And for folk online, you'll find a link to the food bank on the panel to your right should you wish to donate that way.

Session meeting: For members of the Kirk Session, just to note that we have a meeting on Thursday this week at 7pm, and I’ll send out the papers and a link on Sunday evening.

Pulpit swap: Just to flag up that next week, we’ve a pulpit swap, as I’ll be over at Douglas and Rigside celebrating communion with them. In my place will be Denham Macdougall, who’ll be conducting worship for us in the building. Online, I’ll set up links to other online services that some of you in our online community might like to go and visit.

In the meantime, have a good week,
God bless
Nikki

'Roadworks Ahead': Advent 1 worship - Sun 3 De

WELCOME to this first Sunday in the season of Advent, where we begin a brand new church year and, where we prepare for a new beginning, as we travel over these next weeks to a stable in Bethlehem…

Notices, for reference, are copied below. And for the service click on the: WORSHIP LINK HERE

CHURCH NOTICES/
Thanks
to our Leadhills Primary School Christmas elves who did a beautiful job decorating our Christmas tree. It was lovely having you trek through the snow to visit with us on Friday morning!

Parish newsletter: the Christmas newsletter is available both in hard copy and here by clicking on the 'Christmas newsletter '23' tab above this post.

Food Bank: As is our usual practice in a communion month, over these next couple of Sundays, we're flagging up the work of Clydesdale Food Bank. In the church building, you can leave items of food and toiletries our food bank box in the vestibule or, you can access the website using the link HERE
If you’re able to make a donation to help folk in our community who are struggling this Christmas, it would be so appreciated. For items donated at the church, please note that I’ll uplift these after worship on Sunday the 17th to ensure they're with the food bank before Christmas.

Kirk Session meets on Thursday evening at 7pm via zoom – a link will be sent out to members of session, along with the agenda and minutes.

'Tidings of comfort and joy' service: A reminder that, on Saturday at 2pm, we have our annual Tidings of Comfort and Joy service – a gentle, reflective service for those who struggle a little at this time of year. If you know of someone who might find this service helpful, do let them know – and maybe… bring them along.

Carol Praise service: Sun 24 Dec. 10.30am. As Christmas is looming into view, our service on Christmas Eve morning is going to be a Carol service – a bit like our songs of praise service, but… carols: and you get to choose what we’ll sing. If you can let me know what carols you’d all like to sing by Sunday the 17th, that will give me time to get organised.
As to the service itself... there may be a mince pie afterwards to go with our morning tea…
For those of you who watch the pre-recorded service online – do get in touch if you’d like to nominate a favourite carol for the online service – I’ll see what we can do to make it happen! Either you can click on the 'contact us' button on the right hand side of the page to let me know your carol of choice!

As we move into Advent, may the hope of the promised Christ-child lead us ever on...

God bless
Nikki

In Philippi wk 2: 'Humility' - Worship for Sun 15 Oct

WELCOME - welcome to our time of worship. We’re in week two of our explorations into Paul’s letter to the Philippians and there’s more mention of joy as we move into chapter two, along with a wider theme of humility, which is our worship theme for today. To go straight across to the service on YouTube click on the link: WORSHIP LINK IS HERE

Worship Sun 19 March, Lent wk 4: Moving in a mysterious way

WELCOME/ Hello – and welcome to worship. We’re continuing on in our journey through Lent and this week we find ourselves with Ezekiel in a valley filled with dry bones, asking ‘can these bones live?’

If you'd like to go straight across to the service on YouTube you'll find the  WORSHIP LINK HERE

Copied below are our church notices:
This is our support your local food bank month. So, if you’d like to take the opportunity to donate food and other items, they can either be dropped into the box in the church vestibule, or to me at the manse. Alternatively, you can also donate through the webpage HERE

Next week, there’ll be a pulpit swap, as I head across to the congregations of the Douglas Valley to share communion with them. Visiting onsite will be Denham MacDougall – who’s an elder at Cairngryffe and also the interim moderator for Douglas Valley and who some of you already know. Given this, there’ll be no online worship from Upper Clyde, but I’ll put some links to other online services if you’re not able to be with us onsite.

The parish newsletter has been put together and is now at the printers. These will be mailed out to those of you who are members, and spare copies will be available in the hall, as well as in the village stores at Abington and Leadhills, plus at the Abington community hub. I’ve already put an online version of the newsletter up on our blog, if you’d like to access it that way. Just look above this post at the tabs and click on 'Easter newsletter '23'

As we continue our journey through Lent, have a good week!

Worship Sun 5 March - Lent 2: 'Moving on'

WELCOME to worship where we continue our Lent theme
‘On the move’.
Last week, we were moving out… out of the garden with Adam and Eve and into an unlooked for, unwanted, and unknown future. This week, we’re moving on, this time, by invitation: with Abram and his family – as take a step of faith, and make a journey into the unknown.

Congregational meeting today - onsite in the parish church we'll be having a congregational meeting to discuss the presbytery plan. For those of you worshipping online and who are members, or, who live within the parish bounds, we want to make sure you get to have your say as well. If you have any questions, or would like to share your thoughts, get in touch with me - Nikki - either by phone, or email, or via the 'contact us' link to the right of this page. We want to hear from as many of you as possible.

Foodbank donations this month -
as this is a month in which we have a formal communion, you’re invited to make a donation to the Clydesdale foodbank over any of the Sundays in March. You can do this by dropping in items in the box under the vestibule table, at the manse, or by making a donation online via their website…. at CLYDESDALE FOOD BANK DONATIONS

As you move on, into another week of Lent, be blessed and take care,
Nikki
