'Caring Hearts'

hearts all 'round...
Some of the knitted/ crocheted hearts
that have been made for the project so far

UPDATE: (Nov 2022)
We're delighted to say that our target was reached just before the school year began.
As her first assembly, at each of the 5 schools in the parish, Nikki was very chuffed to distribute the hearts: one for each child and member of staff. These were very well received. We love our schools - and all who are in them - so, thank you very much to our lovely crafters who made this possible!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A community project for those of you who who knit and/ or crochet....

The background story:
This project was inspired by the Hearts for Hospitals campaign during lockdown during Covid, where pairs of matching hearts were knitted - one to give to a patient, the other to the family of the patient, by way of keeping a connection when visiting was not permitted...

Springing from this, the idea was raised within the parish of knitting individual hearts that could be used as a wee pastoral resource tool for the children within our 5 primary schools.
Initially, the thought was that a heart might be given to a child experiencing bereavement - loss of some kind - as a way of providing a little bit of care and comfort. When held, or kept in a pocket, or some such, the heart might act as a reminder of the person who has died, or moved away, and that, while they are no longer physically present, this loved one is still held in the child's heart and memories. The knitted heart may also help to encourage the child to talk about their loved one - sharing memories and stories. But overall, it's there also to help the child know that they are loved and cared for.
That's one thought...
in conversations that have followed with some of the parents and teachers, there have been more thoughts about how these might be used - and that's the lovely thing about the project and the hearts: their flexibility.
They could also be given to a child experiencing anxiety, again, as a way of helping the child know that someone cares for, and loves them...
They could be given to each child in the school as a way of saying 'we are family and we look after each other' - our rural schools here are small, and everyone knows each other - a nice way of helping to build upon our already caring school communities...
It's been fun seeing the ideas grow.

Practical caring:
So, with the above in mind:
We'd love to have approximately 150 made to divide between the five schools, which will also provide spare hearts to take home for siblings who may not be at primary school and also, for any staff that might like to have one.
And, from time to time, we may need to replenish the supply, and when we do, we'll let you know.
Copied below, you'll find a crochet and knitting pattern.
If you’d like to take part in this project, and to help the younger members of our community, do let me – or Angela – know, especially if you need a printed copy of the pattern.
